Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 19th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 360. Blue headed Kingfisher. Lath I. 2. p. 631. N. 20. Petit-Martin-pêcheur du Senégal. Buff. pl. enl. 356. Alcedo caeruleacephala Linn." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

Peale wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "No. 2122 & 2123. Blue-headed Kingfishers (A. caerulacephala) inhabit Madagasctar [sic]." Peale also had a specimen from Luzon, Philippines, which he thought was a different species, and of which he stated: "No. 2098. Crested Kingfisher (A. cristata) inhabits Amborna & the Philippine Isles." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)
