Additional Source Text:
Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 32nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "1425. Crested Dominican Gross Beak. Head much crested, ending in a point like the Cardinal Gross Beak [i.e., Norther Cardinal, Cardinalis cardinalis], head and fore part of the neck, red; beneath white; back, wings and tail cinerious; tail long. Loxia Dominicana Linn. Cardinal Dominiquain huppé Buff. pl. enl. 103. Inhabits Brasil and other parts of South America. This was brought from the River La Plata. The plumage is not so bright as one now living in this city [Philadelphia], which induces me to think this was either a young bird, or a female, as the latter is described as tending more to the orange tint on the head instead of the fine glowing scarlet of the male." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
On 19 November 1813, a "Crested Dominican Grosbeak, from S. America" donated by Mrs. S. Wallace was recorded in the Peale Museum Accessions Book, p. 70 (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481). This was apparently a different specimen from the one decribed in Peale's earlier lecture account.
