Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 36th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1785. Red headed Warbler. The top of the head a deep dingy red; from the bill a bright yellow line passes over each Eye; the back an olive green; the throat and breast yellow spotted with red; wing quills & tail Brown edged with grey. Motacilla petechia Linn. Figuier à tête trouge de Pensilvanie Buff. Yellow red-pole Edwards t. 256. The colours too bright. Red headed W. Penn. & Lath. No. 1786. Female." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

In a draft copy of "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805-1806), Peale listed the "Redhead Warbler (M. petechia) rare" (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481). The page of the final draft containing this reference is not located.

Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803–1857) described this species under the name "Palm Warbler / Sylvia palmarum" in his continuation of American Ornithology vol. 2 (1828, Pl. 10).
