Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described this species under the name "Tree Sparrow / Fringilla arborea in American Ornithology vol. 2 (Pl. 16), where "Peale's Museum No. 6575" was cited (Wilson 1810: 123).

Titian Ramsay Peale (1799-1885) made an unfinished drawing (shown here) at "Engineer [Cantonment]" in March 1820 (American Philosophical Society Library, Mss.B.P31.15d, 130). The subject of that drawing may have been deposited with other "sundry small birds" on 23 March 1821, according to the Peale Museum Accessions Book (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481).

Two mounted specimens of "Fringilla monticola (Tree Sparrow)" were listed in "A Catalogue of Duplicate Specimens...", May 1822. [unpublished] American Philosophical Society Library (Mss.B.P31).
