Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 24th Lecture (ca. 1799): "634. White throat Grebe. none of the descriptions which I have read agree with the bird before us. It is larger than the black throat grebe. The bill is longer and not so thick; top of the head, back and wings are brown; the belly underparts silvery white; and I think the skin must be equally […] for […] as the [Tippet?] Grebe of Europe, which sell for 14/each at Geneva. Catesby describes one under the name of the greater Dobchick, which comes the nearest to this of any description I have meet with, yet this [specimen] wants the mark on the side of the neck."
