Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 32nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1414. Black Gross beak is the size of a canary bird; plumage black, except a little white on the fore part of the wing and the inner edges of the quils. Loxia nigra Linn. Bouvreuil noir de Mexique Buff. Little black Bullfinch Catesby t. 68. Inhabits Mexico." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

Notes:

Buffon was incorrect that the specimen came from Mexico. This species is endemic to Cuba.
