Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 20th Lecture (ca. 1799): "428. Carmine throated humming Bird. It is 4 ½ Inches long; its Bill one Inch & 1/8 long, curved and therefore analogous to Creepers, as Edwards remarks; the cheeks and all the fore part of the neck, carmine or crimson Red of Ruby-lustre; the upper part of the head, body and tail, of a soft blackish Brown, with a slight tinge of the blue on the edge of the feathers; a deep gold green shines on the wings; the inferior and superior coverts of the tail are of a fine blue. Trochilus jugularis Linn. The red-breasted Humming bird Edw. & Lath. Carmine-throated Colibri Buff. Inhabits Surinam." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
Notes:
Peale evidently copied his information about its geographic range ("Surinam") from Edwards. However, E. jugularis is only found on the Lesser Antilles.
