Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "Coracias. Roller, are not a numerous genus – none of them inhabit North America, but most of them belong to Assia, Africa & the Islands in the south seas. The Common Roller (Coracas Garrula) also inhabits Europe – This and the Indian Roller (Coracias Indica) from Ceylon [=Sri Lanka], are all we find at present in the Museum, they are beautiful birds." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)
