Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 32nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1410. Chinease Grossbeak. Head & neck black, all other plumage of a chocolate brown. No. 1411. Female, all the upper parts of a pale brown; wing quils & tail dark; underneath the [body] a dingy white. Loxia malacca Linn. Chinese Sparrow Edwards No. 43.
