Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 32nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1410. Chinease Grossbeak. Head & neck black, all other plumage of a chocolate brown. No. 1411. Female, all the upper parts of a pale brown; wing quils & tail dark; underneath the [body] a dingy white. Loxia malacca Linn. Chinese Sparrow Edwards No. 43. They are not sparrows because the Bills have not the character." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
