Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described this species under the name "Pine Finch / Fringilla pinus in American Ornithology vol. 2 (Pl. 17), where "Peale's Museum No. 6577" was cited (Wilson 1810: 133). The species was given a different English name ("American Siskin") on Pl. 17 of the same work.
