By 1805

Primary Source Reference:

Charles Willson Peale, "A Walk through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805-1806). Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481.

Additional Source Text:

Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "The Glossy finch (F. Nitens) of Brazil, does not well agree with the Name, it has not the glossy dress." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)

Notes:

Linnaeus (1766, Systema Naturae) described “Turdus nitens” (= Cape Starling, Lamprotornis nitens) from an African specimen (Angola), so it is likely that Peale’s specimen, which was evidently from Brazil, was misidentified. It is unidentifiable without more information.
