Alexander Wilson (1766-1813) described a species under the name "Water Thrush / Turdus aquaticus" in American Ornithology vol. 3 (Pl. 23), where "Peale's Museum, No. 6896" was cited (Wilson 1811: 66). The species is not identifiable, and likely based on specimens of two morphologically similar species: Northern Waterthrush (Parkesia noveboracensis) and Louisiana Waterthrush (P. motacilla).
