Additional Source Text:

Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 34th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1612. Brown Sparrow. This is a more even brown colour, and less striped than any of our sparrows. It is a rare bird, as such I pass it by without further description in a hope that I shall in some future day make a better acquaince [sic] with it. Buffon has given a plate No. 223 f. 2. Moineau du Canada. Sparrow of Canada, which indicates a likeness to it. It might in a severe season have rambled thus far south."
