Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "The weaver Oriole (oriolus Textor) is a small and a precious bird, it is from Senegal." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)

Notes:

Multiple similarly-colored species in the genus Ploceus occur in Senegal, which confounds identification of Peale’s specimen.
