Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 31st Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1304. Ring-Ouzel. dark brown plumage, the wing coverts edged with ash colour; breast marked with a white crescent. Length 11 Inches. Turdus torquatus Linn. Merles à Collier Buff. pl. enl. 516. This species is found in Europe, Assia & Africa." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

Peale wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "No. [blank] Ring-ouzel (T. Torquatus) found in Europe, Assia & Africa." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)
