Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 32nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1417. White-headed Grossbeak is a bird of China. The body is a dark brown, and plumage of the head nearly white; the bill thick & strong of blueish colour. Loxia maja Linn. Maïa de la Chine. Buff. pl. enl. 109. f. 1. No. 1418. Female.
