Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 38th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1937. Martin Swallow. White on the lower part of the back, breast & underparts; head & back, black glossed with blue; wings & tail black; feet covered with white down. Hirundo urbica Linn. Hirondelle à croupion blanc ou de fenêtre. Buff. pl. enl. 542. f. 2. Inhabits Europe generally, and Mr. Pennant says, during summer in Newfoundland and New York; of this I am doubtful."
