Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 35th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1684. Pied Flycatcher. White front; bill, head, back & feet black; wings barred with white, outer part of the wing coverts white, white round the neck and all the under parts. Muscicapa atricapilla Linn. Le Gobe-mouche noir a collier Pl. enl. 565. f.1.2. No. 1685. female Pied Flycatcher (male). Upper parts brown; under a dingy white. Inhabits France & England, and as far north as [L…]. In that Diocese stay the whole year and, during winter, frequently take refuge in the […] Houses. Muscicapa atricapilla Linn. … No. 1689. Pied Flycatcher (female).
