Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 36th Lecture (ca. 1799): "No. 1817. American Golden Crested Wren. on the top of the head is orange & yellow bounded by black, on each side; these colours is not seen except by dividing the feathers; the plumage on the upper parts olive green; the under parts dingy white; wing coverts dusky, crossed with two white bars; quills & tail dusky edged with pale green. No. 1818. Female. the top of the head yellow, bounded on each side with black; the other plumage like the male. Motacilla regulus Linn. Roitelet huppé Buff. pl. enl. 651. f. 3. Charles Lucien Bonaparte (1803–1857) described the species, and depicted the adult female, under the name "Golden-crowned Gold-crest / Regulus cristatus" in his continuation of American Ornithology vol. 1 (1825, Pl. 2), where "Philadelphia Museum, No. 7246, Male; [and] No. 7247, Female" were cited (Bonaparte 1825: 22).
