Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 22nd Lecture (ca. 1799): "528. It is called the little black duck. The head, neck & breast black; back speckled with black and white; under parts of the body white; wings light brown finely speckled with white; tail light brown, & short." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)
