Charles Willson Peale (1741-1827) wrote, in his 26th Lecture (ca. 1799): "919. Thick-kneed Bustard Pluver. commonly called Thick Kneed Bustard. The plumage of a rusty grey, striped with brown. It was sent [to] me by my correspondant at London. Charadria oedicnemus Linn. Grand pluvier. Buff. pl. enl. 919. Thick kneed Bustard, Brit. Zool. This bird is found in Europe & Africa … 927. Probably the female of No. 919. Oedicnemus Linn. Grand pluvier, ou ordinairement courles de terre. Buff." (Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University Archives, coll. 40)

Peale wrote, in "A Walk Through the Philad[elphi]a Museum" (1805–1806): "The Bustard plover (C. oedicnemus) commonly called Thick kneed Bustard, is the largest species [in Charadrius]." (Historical Society of Pennsylvania, coll. 0481)
